We aim to understand the Omani sustainable built environment from stakeholders’ point of view and elicit its components using consensus development methods; and prioritize the elicited components in terms of their relative importance using a more advanced statistical data collection and analysis methodology.
This project is expected to provide essential evidence-based findings for future research in the field of sustainable built environment in Oman; as well as provide informative data for policy-makers when forming, implementing and monitoring policies related to sustainable built environment. Doing so helps to fine-tune policies to meet the actual needs of the Omani society while preserving their values and preferences.

Dr. Chaham is an architect, educator, Chief Editor, and researcher in the field of architectural engineering and urbanism. He writes and speaks regularly on how to improve people’s quality of life through sustainable and smart built environment. He believes that the built environment is made for people and it should be designed and constructed as such. He is Editor-in-Chief of the refereed journal “Open House International” and Associated Editor in another referred journals.
Dr. Chaham holds a PhD from Heriot-Watt University, UK; and a PG Dip. in architectural design and B.Sc. in architectural engineering from the University of Aleppo, Syria. His research, teaching, and services were recognized for excellence with several international and local awards. He has authored, co-authored, and co-edited a large number of peer-reviewed articles, technical reports and books covering a wide range of topics related to his broad area of interest. His research was featured in Elsevier newsletter, Elsevier Engineering Twitter account, The Australian Architectural Science Association newsletter, the Spanish online magazine “The Smart City Journal”, and the Omani “Scientific Insights” newsletters. As for the research fund, Dr. Chaham awarded total research grants and project fund, as a PI and Co-I, of 872,861 $ from internal and external sources.
Dr. Chaham held invited talks and keynote speeches at international conferences in Spain and Italy; and many other talks, workshops, and presentations in several international, regional, and local conferences and events. He acts as a reviewer for a range of reputable and high-impact journals, and he reviewed for more than 18 international conferences from China to the UK. He is currently teaching and researching at Sultan Qaboos University in Oman, having previously researched and taught at universities in the UK and Syria. There, he also worked in several architectural consultancy firms and in two European commission-funded projects.

Dr. Saleh Al-Saadi has a diversified work experience in industry and academia. He held several positions in PDO between 1997-2003 and then worked in Saudi Arabia as an MEP engineer between 2005-2007. Since 2007, he is a faculty member at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). Dr. Saleh is now an associate professor of building energy systems and the program coordinator of the Architectural Engineering program at SQU. In 2020, he became the first president of the ASHRAE Oman Chapter. Dr. Saleh holds a Ph.D. in Building systems engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder (USA). His current research interests include modeling, design and analysis of building energy systems, energy conservation, energy auditing and retrofitting opportunities in existing buildings, renewable and sustainable energy applications for buildings.

Alya Al-Hashim is an Assistant Professor in College of Civil & Architectural Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University. Her research aims to evaluate different urban fabric performances, which includes: urban energy, outdoor thermal comfort, visibility, connectivity and daylight. She also worked in documenting old Omani settlements as part of a funded project by Ministry of Culture & Heritage in Oman, which contributed to her interest in understanding the urban fabric and how it behaves.
Alya completed her PhD degree from Georgia Institute of Technology in High-Performance Building (HPB) program in 2020 where she was part of the group researching the impact of design uncertainty on building energy prediction. She further adopted this concept into the urban level and developed multiple normative urban-performance predictors, which she seeks to implement in the current industry design approach.
Through her research and teaching, Alya aims to support design decision-making process to help make informed decisions with awareness of its impact on environment, society and urban fabric. She intersects design studio and technology-steered courses to equip students and introduce them to new realms of possibilities in architectural design process.
